Chapter
16 - The Yoga of Division between
the Divine and the Demonical
The
Blessed Sri Krsn said:
Fearlessness,
purity of heart, steadfastness in yoga for
knowledge, charity, self-control,
sacrifice, study of the scriptures,
austerity and straightforwardness. (16.01)
Nonviolence,
truth, free from anger, renunciation,
Tranquillity, aversion to fault finding,
compassion to living beings, freedom from
covetousness, gentleness, modesty and
steadiness (absence of fickleness).
(16.02)
Vigor,
forgiveness, fortitude, purity, freedom
from malice and excessive pride-these, O
descendent of Bharat, are the marks of him
who is endowed with divine nature. (16.03)
Hypocrisy
(ostentation), arrogance, pride, anger,
harshness, and ignorance: These are the
marks, O Parth (Arjun), of him who is
endowed with demoniac nature. (16.04)
The
divine nature is conducive to liberation
and the demoniac to bondage. Grieve not, O
Pandav (Arjun), thou art born with divine
endowments. (16.05)
There
are two types of human beings in this
world - the divine and the demonic. The
divine has been described at length, now
hear from Me about the demonic, O Arjun.
(16.06)
The
demonic don't know what to do and what to
refrain from. Neither purity, nor good
conduct nor truth is found in them.
(16.07)
They
say, "The universe is without truth,
without a moral basis, without a Lord,
born of mutual union, brought about by
lust; what else? (16.08)
Holding
fast to his view, these ruined souls of
feeble understanding and cruel deeds, rise
up as the enemies of the world for its
destruction. (16.09)
Filled
with insatiable desires, full of
hypocrisy, pride, and arrogance; holding
wrong views through delusion; they act
with impure resolve. (16.10)
Obsessed
with innumerable cares ending only with
death, looking upon the gratification of
desires as their highest aim and feeling
sure that that is all. (16.11)
Bound
by hundreds of ties of hope, given over to
lust and anger, they strive to amass
hoards of wealth, by unjust means and
sensual enjoyments. (16.12)
This
has been gained by me today, I shall
fulfill this desire, this Wealth is mine
and this wealth also shall be mine in the
future; (16.13)
That
foe has been slain by me, and I shall slay
others also. I am the Lord. I am the
enjoyer, I am successful, powerful, and
happy; (16.14)
I
am rich and well-born. Who else is equal
to me? I shall perform sacrifices. I shall
give charity. I shall rejoice," thus
deluded by ignorance. (16.15)
Bewildered
by many a fancy; entangled in the snare of
delusion; addicted to the gratification of
desires, they fall into a foul hell.
(16.16)
Self-conceited,
stubborn, filled with pride and
intoxication of wealth; they perform Yajna
(sacrifices/prayers/rituals) only in name
with ostentation, disregarding scriptural
ordinances. (16.17)
Given
over to egoism, force, pride, lust and
anger, these malicious people despise Me
Who is situated in their own bodies and in
the bodies of others. (16.18)
Those
cruel haters, worst among men in the
world, I hurl constantly these evil doers
in the wombs of demons only. (16.19)
Fallen
into the wombs of demons, these deluded
beings, from birth to birth, do not attain
to Me, O Son of Kunti (Arjun), but sink
down to a still lower state. (16.20)
Triple
is the gate of this hell, leading to the
ruins of the soul - lust (desire) anger
and greed. Therefore one should abandon
these three. (16.21)
The
man freed from these three gates to
darkness practises what is good for him
and then attains the Supreme Goal, O Son
of Kunti (Arjun). (16.22)
He
who, having cast aside the ordinances of
the scriptures, acts under the impulse of
desire, attains neither perfection, nor
happiness nor the Supreme Goal. (16.23)
Therefore,
let the scripture be the authority in
determining what ought to be done and what
ought not to be done. Having known what is
said in the ordinance of the scripture,
you should act here in this world. (16.24)
Thus
with the utterance of Om, Tat, Sat, the
names of the Lord, in the Upanisad of the
Bhagawad Gita, the knowledge of Brahman,
the supreme, the science of Yoga and the
dialogue between Sri Krsn and Arjun, this
is the sixteenth discourse designated:
"The Yoga of Division between the
Divine and the Demonical"
